It was 90 years ago today that women in our country were finally recognized as true citizens and given the right to vote. The 19th Amendment was added to the U.S. Constitution. When I used to teach Government I would joke with the kids and tell them that the 19th Amendment was the most important amendment to the Constitution. They didn't always agree. It is hard to name just one as the most important, but I know that the 19th is of particular importance to me. As a student and then teacher of American History and Government, my heart swells when I think of all that the suffragists went through to get this basic right for all women. They endured imprisonment, torture, and some of them even gave their lives. It makes me so proud to be a woman! When I think of people taking this essential right for granted and not exercising it I get really frustrated and angry. They sacrificed so much so that I could have a better life in this great country! I hope that everyone will take a moment today to reflect on that and to say a little thanks.
