I made this hat for a friend at work, Kelly, who is having her first baby in about three weeks. She is having a baby boy. Now, I've known all along that she was having this baby, and that eventually we would have a shower for her, but somehow it still snuck up on me. So, last Friday when I was told about the shower happening on Wednesday, my thought was "Oh no - I want to make her a hat, that's not a lot of time!" Then I went to see my massage therapist. My shoulders have been giving me trouble and they were bad last Friday, I was told "NO KNITTING (until shoulders feel considerably better)". So, I cast on this baby on Saturday night. I did refer to a hat pattern I've had for forever, the Bailey Hat, to get a thought about how many stitches to cast on, but after that it was all thoughts in my head about how sweet some cables would look on a little guy.
It ended up being kind of long, longer probably than a new born needs unless that new born has a large head. But, I figure he can grow into it. It's stretchy, which I think is why it fits on Lola, but it she has a small head and it's snug on her - you can see her through the hat. I used stash yarn for this. I knew I had yarn in my stash that would work, and a baby hat doesn't take a lot of yarn. I know this yarn is a Mountain Colors sock yarn, but I don't know which colorway it is because I lost the tag. I was a little worried about the bright colors because Kelly had been telling me that all the baby clothes she had for her little guy have been in earth tones. But, fortunately, she loved it! Yay!
I don't have a name for this pattern yet, I'm naming it after the little guy and a name won't be officially decided for him until he arrives. Kelly has told me she will let me know the name as soon as she can and then my plan is to make the pattern available to others for free on ravelry. It will be my first time contributing anything since it is my first original design! I'm pretty excited about this.
My other exciting knitting news is that through ravelry I was contacted by the designer of the Nachaq Hood I knit for my BKFF. She asked to use one of my pictures of Lola wearing it on the ravely pattern page for that pattern! I was so surprised and honored! If you are on ravelry you can check out the pattern and see Lola there!
My final bit of exciting news is that it is SUMMER VACATION!! YAY!! My knitting goal for summer is to finish some UFO's that I have laying around here. But for now, it is a beautiful day outside so I need to get out there!
